THE COACHES

GARETH MILLINGS

I read about CrossFit™ back in 2006 while brushing up on my bicep curls in Muscle & Fitness. it instantly struck a chord with me. Fran, Murph and the Filthy Fifty were the 3 workouts being discussed in the article. My attention was instantly grabbed by the Filthy Fifty.

I went in to the Liberty Gym in Baghdad, set up my jumping pull ups grabbed my empty 20kg bar, my wall ball (not a dynamax I may add) and started crushing, well being crushed by this disgusting WOD. 26mins later and I was assuming the standard CrossFit recovery position, flat on my back wondering how I just got destroyed. It was my mission then to set up AFS CrossFit.

DAVID MILLINGS

I first found CrossFit™ in 2009 when my big bro told me to try it. My first experience was the 300 workout. It ruined me, I had to cap it at 15 mins as had a bus to catch. The whole journey home was spent trying not to show the person in front of me what I had eaten that day. When the box that is AFS CrossFit opened I jumped on board to support my bro. I have never looked back.

Over the past couple of years I have developed in to an all round athlete and have a new perspective on training and life in general. My favourite aspects of CrossFit™ are definitely the weightlifting parts. I love to pick up heavy stuff. My dislikes are simple anything that involves me running long distances, by which I mean 400m +. I am very passionate about developing technique and skill among our members and will be the one issuing punishments for bad tekkers!!

KATHRYN MCEWEN

I first found CrossFit™ through the ‘Hampshire Fittest college competition’. Coming from a Modern Triathlon background I was instantly hooked. I started in 2012 at CrossFit Swansea when at university. Best decision I ever made! Since finishing university, I returned to AFS and now train twice a day 5-6 days a week. I have qualified for a number of European CrossFit competitions including the Athlete Games and Battle of the Beasts.

After 6 years of experience teaching swimming and sailing, teaching all ages from 2+, I have learnt many important coaching skills, including how to make sessions fun and enjoyable. My goal is to transfer this skill into my CrossFit™ coaching. Life should be fun!

BRAD STEAD

I first walked in to AFS a complete novice and having no idea what to expect. The first movement I was asked to do was an overhead squat, I’ve never had so much difficulty and frustration trying to do something before in my life! I found that my body just would no do what I wanted. Ever since that initial challenge I was hooked, it has filled the hole that used to be football. I love the camaraderie, the ethos of AFS, competing and coaching.
